Internet Management
In the course of every day Curtin students and staff access a huge amount of information on the internet. The internet is an essential resource for all kinds of learning, teaching, research, and work, but it is not a free resource. All internet use translates as a cost to Curtin in the same way that using the internet through a private ISP has a cost at home.
There are materials available on the internet that are not normally required for the core business of the university. Accessing these materials may represent an unnecessary cost and an unnecessary network load.
In order to address these issues, Curtin has implemented the following internet management strategies:
- When using a University computer to access web-based content that is located outside Curtin, students and staff are required to login using their ID and password. Each staff member and student is granted a monthly quota of internet downloads and browsing; when that person's internet quota is used up, their internet accesses will be limited to a much lower rate. If your quota was used up doing work related to University purposes, you can apply for an increase through your Faculty or Area IT support team.
- Some web pages are not immediately displayed when you browse to them. In these cases, you will be queried whether you want to view them as part of your University research, study or work (if you confirm that is so, the page will be displayed; otherwise it will not be).
- Some web pages are blocked by default. To access a blocked page, staff members will need to contact their Faculty or Area IT support team for assistance. Students should seek approval from an authorised person (eg a Head of School).
These measures will help to ensure the internet is readily available for academic and business purposes.
